The Forge (Short Story)

Rivals to Lovers • Dark Elves • Myth Retelling

A legendary smith, Völund, is sent to claim Brísingamen for Freya, but the necklace rests in the guarded forge of Dvalin, a ruthless dark-elf master who sets her own price: four nights of work side-by-side, each ending in a truth neither can take back. As sparks fly and steel sings, rivalry tempers into desire, and the choice to surrender the god-jewel becomes tangled with a far riskier surrender of pride and heart. When dawn comes, Dvalin must decide whether the necklace and Völund leave her forge, as enemies, partners, or something far more dangerous.

The Characters

Völund

Dark Elf. - Male
Hair: White
Eyes: Gold
Height: 6'3"
Home: The Fire Mountain

Völund is Freya’s favored disciple and a master smith from the Fire Mountain, born after the goddess settled there, trained in sword-craft by Od and in Seidr by Freya. By coming of age he had already forged legendary works (Gram; ring mail for Tanmark’s king; and, most notably, Sumarbrander for Freyr), establishing a reputation that precedes him wherever he travels.

He arrives on his errand from Freya proud and dismissive of Oksurland’s “backwater” at first, but he’s fundamentally serious, disciplined, and honest about craft. What begins as a divine errand becomes a test of craft, pride, and heart when he meets Dvalin, a dark elf whose talent rivals his own. Together, they forge more than metal, challenging fate, and the boundaries of creation itself.

Dvalin

Dark Elf - Female
Hair: Black
Eyes: Amethyst
Height: 5'10"
Home: Oksurland

Dvalin is a dark elf smith of remarkable talent, dwelling deep within the cavern halls of Oksurland, where the Great Forge resides. She inherited the forge from her mentors, the dwarven brothers Brokkr and Eitri, and through them learned both reverence and rebellion. Her craft embodies that duality: precision married to instinct, patience balanced by fury.

Dvalin’s skill as a smith and enchanter surpasses nearly any mortal or elf alive. She forges weapons and artifacts that blur the line between the physical and divine, objects that “remember” their purpose and grow stronger with each act of will. She doesn’t worship the gods; she acknowledges them as forces, not masters. When Freya’s disciple, Völund, arrives seeking her aid, she mocks his devotion but respects his craft. Beneath the rivalry, she senses a kinship—a shared language of metal, heat, and creation.

Grerr

Dwarf - Male
Hair: Brown
Eyes: Brown
Height: 5'2"
Home: Oksurland

A seasoned smith, Grerr has worked the bellows and forges of Oksurland for decades, long enough to remember the days of Brokkr and Sindri, whom he still reveres. Though he jokes freely, he’s deeply loyal to Dvalin, respecting her leadership and often grounding her more volatile temper with banter or blunt advice.

Grerr embodies the pragmatic heart of dwarven craftsmanship, witty, cynical, and full of earthy wisdom. He teases Dvalin about her fascination with Völund, but his insight and warmth reveal genuine affection. Beneath the laughter, he’s a craftsman who honors the old ways and quietly ensures the forge runs as it should, even when gods and legends interfere
